Link and re-verify your Riot account

Link your Riot account with icon verification, then handle re-verifying an older link and unlinking.

On this page

Before you start

Note · You need
  • You are a member of a Discord server that has the Kletoi bot.
  • A Riot account you can open in the League client. You change its profile icon for a moment.
  • Your Riot ID (game name and tag). You can see it at the top right of the client or on op.gg.
  • The account must be in the region the bot looks at. If it is from another region or has never played League, no League profile is found.

Linking Riot is optional. Once linked, the ranked and normal games of this account are collected onto your profile on a schedule. Only if the server turned on Require Riot link do you need it to be added to a match. The shortest path is in A member's first 5 minutes. This page goes deeper into the verification and what comes after.

Note · How linking works
  • A link belongs to one server. Each server keeps only one linked Riot account for you.
  • One Riot account can be linked to only one member within a server.
  • A link you create now is created only after the icon verification is done, whether you start on Discord or on the web.

Start linking

Start from a Discord command or from your web profile, whichever is easier. Both go through the same verification and share the same count of new verifications.

Where do you want to do this?

In the web console

Start from the Riot row of your profile

HomeMy profile

Before you link, the Riot row has two input fields. Fill in Game Name and Tagline, then press Link. You can paste the whole Name#KR1 into the name field.

The verification screen opens

If the Riot ID is found, the Riot icon check screen opens right away. If not, the same spot on your profile shows “Couldn't find that Riot ID”.

In Discord

Enter the command

/riot linkPut the whole Name#KR1 into game_name and leave tag_line empty, or split it across the two. If the tags in the two fields differ, the bot asks you to fill in just one.

Enter this command in a server channel. It cannot be used in a DM.

Read the verification message

The bot shows a verification message that only you can see. Your Riot ID is in the title, with one picture and the CheckCancel buttons. The picture is the icon to switch to.

Verify with the icon

We verify that the account is yours with its profile icon. If you can switch it to the default icon the bot picked, the account is yours, so nobody can link someone else's Riot ID.

Look at the icon you got

You get one default icon that differs from the one you use now. Discord shows it as a picture; the web shows it with the label “Default icon #n”.

Switch the icon in the League client

Click your profile icon at the top right of the client. Pick the icon you were given from the default icons and save.

Press the verify button in time

Come back within 10 minutes and press the verify button. On Discord the label is Check; on the web it is Verify. The web screen shows the time left as a count and the end time as “Until HH:MM · 10 min”.

A match links it right away

The bot reads your current icon from Riot and compares it with the one you were given. If they match, the account is linked on the spot. You can switch back to your usual icon afterwards. The web shows “Verified — your Riot ID is now linked”.

Note · Good to know while you verify
  • You can start up to 3 new verifications in 1 hour, Discord and web counted together.
  • A verification you start from the Find my records page uses the same count. Details are in When you are short of players.
  • With one icon you can press the verify button up to 10 times, at least 5 seconds apart.
  • Once you start a new verification, the icon you got earlier no longer works.
  • An attempt that could not start because Riot did not respond is not counted.
You are done when you see this

When the link is done, the Riot row of your profile shows the linked chip and a “Verified · date” badge. On Discord, the /riot whoami command tells you which account is linked.

Note · What we store
  • When you link, we store your Riot ID, your PUUID (Riot's account identifier), profile icon id, summoner level, region, the link time, the ownership-verification time, the re-verification deadline and the last sync time.
  • Your linked Riot ID is visible to members of the same server, in places like the 10-player table of in-house records and match details.
  • The verification request itself is not stored; it is handled in server memory only. If a verification fails, only who ran it, on which server and why is kept in the admin action log, with no Riot ID. If a Riot lookup errors out, though, the first part of the Riot ID or PUUID may be left in the server log. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
  • While linked, ranked and normal game records are collected periodically and keep accumulating, with no set expiry.
  • A server admin can start a past-record import of up to 200 recent games for each linked account without asking the member, and it includes games played before linking. Details are in Importing past records and replays and the Privacy Policy.

When verification fails or runs out

Caution · If it says the icon differs
  • Make sure you saved the icon in the client, then press the verify button again after about 1~2 minutes. Riot can be slow to update.
  • The web also tells you which icon it read (“Your current icon is #7”). Compare it with the number you were given.
  • Pressing the verify button too fast shows “Too many requests”. Wait about 5 seconds.
  • Once you have used all 10 presses on one icon, that icon is closed. Start a new verification.
Caution · If time ran out or the limit is used up
  • A verification ends after 10 minutes. On Discord, start again with /riot link; on the web, press Get a new icon. Starting again uses one of your new verifications.
  • Once all 3 new verifications are used, you can start again 1 hour after the earliest of them. Discord tells you how many minutes to wait; the web tells you the time you can try again.
  • If you already have an icon in progress, you can still finish that verification even after the limit is used up. The web shows “You've used all 3 new checks — you can still finish this one”.
  • If you see “This check is closed”, that verification was replaced by a new one or has already finished. A verification in progress also closes this way while the bot restarts. Start again with /riot link.

To stop, press Cancel (the same on Discord and the web). Your link does not change.

Common problems

Note · When linking will not start
  • “Couldn't find that Riot ID” — double-check the game name and the tag after the #. Copying the full Name#Tag from the client avoids typos. A name without a tag cannot be linked.
  • If the name and tag went into separate fields, make sure the tag is the same in both. If not, you see “The two tags don't match”.
  • “Couldn't find a League profile for that Riot account in this region” (on the web, “No League profile found in this region”) — the account has no League profile in the region the bot looks at. It may be from another region or never have played League.
  • “Too many requests” — Riot lookups run once per 10 seconds per person per server. Linking and Refresh icon share that gap. Try again in a moment.
  • “Riot linking isn't available right now” (on the web, “Can't check Riot IDs right now”) — shown when Riot is briefly unavailable. It is not your input; try again later. If it happened while starting a verification, it is not counted as a new verification. If it happened while you pressed the verify button, that press still counts toward your presses.
Note · If another member already linked the account
  • If it is really your account, just verify it. The message says: “This account is linked to another member of this server. Once you finish the check, the link moves to you and theirs is removed.” On the web, the button becomes Verify and move it to me.
  • Only someone who can open that Riot account in the client can switch its icon, so nobody can pass the verification for an account that is not theirs.
  • If your link was moved to another member, you are told once the next time you use a /riot command or open your profile. The web shows “Your Riot link was removed” with a Link again button. If the account is yours, link it again and verify to get it back.
  • If another member verifies the same account on a different server, your link on this server stays, but its icon-verification mark is cleared. It then falls under the re-verification below.

Older links must be verified within 30 days

An account linked before the icon verification existed was linked without that verification. A link whose verification mark was cleared, as described above, counts the same way. Such a link must pass the same icon verification within 30 days. The days are counted from the day the clean-up job, which runs once a day, first sets the deadline.

The linked chip and the Needs check badge. Once a deadline is set, the days left are added, like “Needs check · Nd”. Below them are the “Existing link · icon not verified” note and the Verify iconRefresh iconUnlink buttons. Verify icon comes first.

A notice appears once a deadline is set

Once a deadline is set, a “Please re-verify your Riot link — N days left” notice appears at the top of the server screens. It shows the date by which you must finish the icon verification and has a Verify now button. On Discord, the replies of /riot whoami and /riot sync get a line with the same meaning. If no deadline is set yet, the web shows no such notice, and only the Discord command replies carry a note without a date.

Finish the same check

Press Verify now or the Verify icon button on your profile and the same verification screen from above opens. On Discord, run /riot link with the same Riot ID and finish the same verification. When it is done, a “Verified · date” badge appears on your profile and no further re-check is needed.

Caution · If you miss the deadline
  • After the deadline, the clean-up job that runs once a day removes the link. Your collected match history is not deleted, and it continues if you link and verify again.
  • For 7 days after the link is removed, a “Your Riot link was removed” notice with a Link again button shows at the top of the server screens. Your profile keeps a “Last link · removed date” line. What your profile then shows is also in My records are missing.
  • On Discord, you are told once under the reply of the next /riot command. If you open your web profile first, Discord does not add a separate note.
  • On a server that turned on Require Riot link, you cannot be added to new matches until you link again.

Where do you want to do this?

In the web console

Unlink from your profile

HomeMy profile

Press Unlink in the Riot row and a “Unlink Riot account” confirmation opens. Press Unlink once more in that window to unlink.

In Discord

Unlink with the command

/riot unlinkIf a link exists, the bot replies “Unlinked your Riot account.”. If none exists, it replies “You don't have a linked Riot account.”.

To switch accounts, link the new one

There is no separate switch button. Link the account you want with its Riot ID from the start and finish the icon verification, and the link in that server becomes the new account. You do not need to unlink first. A server always keeps just one account for you.

Note · What happens when you unlink
  • New ranked and normal games are no longer collected. What your profile shows after you unlink is in My records are missing.
  • The stored link details, such as your Riot ID and PUUID, are deleted. The admin action log keeps the fact that you linked and your Riot ID for its retention period (see the Privacy Policy).
  • If you unlink yourself, your own rows in the participant tables of games other members collected (across all servers), the PUUID copies kept on this server and your solo-rank snapshots are deleted too. When the link is removed automatically after the deadline, your rows in the participant tables are not deleted.
  • Ranked and normal games already collected are not deleted, and they continue if you link the same account again. Deleting them takes the /voice-meta forget-me command. How it differs from unlinking is in Delete your data or change privacy settings.
  • On a server that turned on Require Riot link, you cannot be added to new matches until you link again.

The shortest path for linking and verification is in A member's first 5 minutes. How to read your records on the profile and refresh them is in Your profile and match history. How a server admin fills in the past records of linked members in one go is in Importing past records and replays. How to enter a game played outside the flow is in Confirm a result and enter records. To look around the web screens, see A tour of the web console and logging in. The difference between unlinking and deleting your records is in Delete your data or change privacy settings.

Check it worked

You are done when you see this

The Riot row of your profile shows the linked chip and a “Verified · date” badge, and /riot whoami shows your Riot ID. If no re-verify notice or Needs check badge is left, you are done.
