No invite DM: check these first (30 seconds)
This page is for a member who did not get a match invite DM, and for an admin whose members did not. Some causes a member can fix and some only an admin can, so each cause says who fixes it. The causes are ordered from the most common.
- You can answer even without the DM. The web My matches page (the invite line in the Notifications bell opens it too) and the invite post in the announce channel record the same answer (Reply to a match invite).
- The invite DM goes out once, when the match is created. Fixing a cause does not send the invite you already missed again.
Look at My matches on the web first
Log in to kletoi.com with Discord and open it (A tour of the web console and logging in). If the match is on the list, you were invited: see causes 1 and 2 below. If it is not on the list, you are not on the roster: see cause 3.
Look at the notification bell
If the Notifications bell on the web has an invite line with a DM not received mark, the DM could not be delivered: see cause 2 first. If there is no invite line at all, the server may have DM notifications turned off, and an invite blocked that way does not show in the bell: see cause 1.
1. The server has DM notifications off
If the server's Allow bot DM notifications switch is off, the bot does not send match invite DMs. Other event DMs such as confirmations, cancellations and reminders are blocked with it. Billing notices are the exception. A new server starts with this switch off. A server that was already in use may have it on, and an admin may have changed it. This switch is applied before a member's own settings.
- Only a server admin can change it. A member cannot, so ask an admin to check this switch.
- Even with the switch off, an invite is posted in the channel set under Match announce channel if the server has one. See the section “When a DM fails, the announce channel gets a post” below.
Admin: turn the switch on
Turn on the Allow bot DM notifications switch and press Save. On a server with no trigger yet, the Settings menu is locked and will not open. Then read The console is locked or commands are missing. You can see the current state in Discord.
/admin show-configLook at the Bot DM notifications lineInvite DMs go out for matches you create after you turn it on. For a match that already exists, members answer on the web, or on the announce channel post if one was made. If you create a match on a server with the switch off and no announce channel, the match is created but you see a notice that the invite reached no one.
The Bot DM notifications line shows 🟢 On. You are done when members on the roster of the next match you create get the invite DM.
The steps are in A server admin's first 5 minutes, and what the switch means is in Server settings at a glance.
2. Discord refuses the DM
Even with the server switch on, no DM arrives if Discord refuses the bot's DM. It happens when the person has set Discord not to accept DMs from server members, or has blocked the bot. Discord's settings screens change, so this page does not give a path. Look in Discord's privacy settings for the option that allows DMs from server members.
Member: let Discord deliver DMs to you
The bot records a refused DM as failed. The invite line in the web Notifications bell then carries a DM not received mark. Rarely, the same mark appears when the bot could not look the person up. Changing Discord settings does not resend the invite you missed. Answer that match on the web My matches page or on the announce channel post. DMs arrive from the next match on.
- The bot cannot DM someone who blocks DMs, and a server admin cannot lift that block either. The person has to change it in Discord.
- Until then the person can answer on the web or on the announce channel post, and the match goes on as usual.
3. You are not on the roster, or not in the server
Invite DMs go only to server members on the match roster. A person who is not in the server, or who has left, cannot be put on a roster, so there is no invite and no DM. The same goes for someone the match creator did not add.
- If the server has the Require Riot link switch on, a match cannot be created with a roster that includes a member who has not linked a Riot account. That member gets a link reminder DM instead of an invite. That DM is not sent either when the server's DM notifications switch is off or when the member has switched off Reminders & nudges. A match made by a recurring schedule is created without such members (Recurring matches and time polls). How to link is in Link and re-verify your Riot account.
Member: make sure you are in the server, then tell the matchmaker
If the match is not on your web My matches page, you are not on the roster. Check that you are in the server, then tell the matchmaker who created the match or a server admin. The match runners set the roster.
4. Only reminders are missing: your DM preferences
A member can switch off two groups on the Home DM preferences card: reminders and availability polls (Reminders & nudges switch) and result notices such as record notices (Results & summaries switch). Match invites, lineup confirmations, match cancellations and substitute DMs cannot be turned off, so they go out whatever this setting says. So this setting is not the reason an invite DM is missing. If the server's DM notifications switch is off, even those essential DMs are blocked (cause 1).
- The member themselves. The setting applies to every server the member is in, and an admin cannot change it for them.
- How to change it is in Delete your data or change privacy settings.
When a DM fails, the announce channel gets a post
If the server has a Match announce channel and some invited people were not reached by DM, the bot posts an invite in that channel. The post has a mention of each invited person, the invite text, an invite card with the schedule and roster, and the JoinMaybeDecline buttons.
- When no DM reached anyone (the server switch is off, or everyone is blocked): it mentions everyone invited.
- When only some DMs failed: it mentions only the people who were not reached. People who got the DM are not pinged again.
- It is posted once per match. Nothing is posted if no announce channel is set, if the channel is gone, or if the bot cannot write in it.
Everyone who can see the channel sees the post, but only invited people can answer. An admin cannot turn this post off. To have it posted, set the channel in Server settings at a glance and make sure the bot can write there.
When you create a match with someone the DM cannot reach, the announce channel gets an invite post that mentions that person. When the mentioned person presses a button on it, a notice that only they can see appears.
Check lists
- The match is not on your web My matches page: see cause 3.
- The bell's invite line has a DM not received mark: see cause 2.
- Other members did not get it either: see cause 1. Only reminders are missing: see cause 4.
- Several members missed it: check that the Bot DM notifications line of the
/admin show-configcommand shows 🟢 On (cause 1). - Check that a Match announce channel is set and the bot can write there (the announce channel section).
- Only one person missed it: check the roster, server membership and Riot link (cause 3), then tell them about their Discord DM setting (cause 2).
If it still does not work
If none of the causes above fits, tell your server admin first. If the admin cannot solve it, you can contact the operator.
- Read the Frequently asked questions page first.
- The
/supportcommand in Discord shows how to reach us. - You can also send the bot a DM directly, and the message is passed to the operator.
- You can also write by email: admin@kletoi.com
- If a Discord support server link is set, it also shows at the bottom of the FAQ page and in the
/supportreply.
When you write, include the server name, the match number, and how far you got in the check lists above.
Where to go next
How to answer an invite without the DM is in Reply to a match invite. The admin steps for the DM switch and the announce channel are in A server admin's first 5 minutes. Which DMs go out at each stage is in Run a match, step by step, and the setting for choosing your DMs is in Delete your data or change privacy settings. A member's first-day guide is A member's first 5 minutes.
Check it worked
You are done when the invite for the next match arrives as a DM and pressing a button turns the DM text into a line that confirms your answer. Even if the DM still does not arrive, your answer is recorded as long as the Your reply row on the web My matches page shows the answer you pressed.
