Before you start
- You need to be invited to a match your server's matchmaker opened. If no invite DM arrives, that is fine: there are other places to answer below.
- What your answer can do depends on the match's stage. Stages run Recruiting → Roster pending → Lineup locked → In progress → Finished.
- The basics of the three buttons are in A member's first 5 minutes. This page goes further.

Answer on My matches on the web
Open a match that is recruiting or has its roster pending and the Your reply row shows your current answer. The JoinMaybeDecline buttons record the same answers as the DM buttons. After you answer, a one-line notice appears on the same page.
Open it from the notification bell
The Notifications bell on the web keeps lines like “You're invited to match #12 — joining?”. Press a line to open that match page and answer there. A line whose DM did not arrive carries a DM not received mark. If the server turned Allow bot DM notifications off, that invite does not show in the bell (A server admin's first 5 minutes). How to tell the cause from what the bell shows is in I didn't get the invite DM.
En Discord
Press a button in the DM
Press one of JoinMaybeDecline. The DM text turns into a line that confirms your answer, and the buttons stay. Only the invited person can press them.
Answer on the invite in the announce channel
If the server has set the Match announce channel and some people were not reached by DM, the bot posts the invite there and mentions the people it could not DM. The JoinMaybeDecline buttons on it record the same answers as the DM buttons.
The post is visible to everyone who can see the channel, but only invited people can answer. The confirmation after you press is shown only to you.
Whichever place you use, the same answer is recorded. Reload the web match page and the Your reply row shows the answer you just pressed.
What each answer means
- Join — you count as playing. When the lineup is locked you get the Teams assembled DM.
- Maybe — means you will probably play. The matchmaker can put maybes on a team, and the moment they press Lock lineup, every maybe becomes a join. If you cannot make it, press Decline before then.
- Decline — means you will not play. There is no penalty, and it is the only answer that still works in the Roster pending stage. From the Lineup locked stage on, it no longer changes either.
- If you do not answer you stay No reply. For a recruiting match that has a scheduled time, people who have not answered get one more reminder DM once the start is within 60 minutes. How a time gets set is in Recurring matches and time polls.
When you can change your answer
Check the current stage
- Recruiting stage: switch between JoinMaybeDecline as often as you like, with no penalty.
- Roster pending stage (after Confirm roster is pressed): only Decline works. Even people who have not answered, or answered maybe, can no longer press join. On the web the join and maybe buttons are greyed out. There is no penalty.
- Lineup locked stage (after Lock lineup is pressed): answers can no longer change. People who joined see Spot confirmed, and pulling out counts as a no-show (see “Pulling out after the lineup is locked” below). Anyone still on maybe becomes a join at this point.
- From the In progress stage (after Start match is pressed) there is nothing left for you to press. The web page shows “The match is in progress — the matchmaker will record the result.”
- A Finished or cancelled match takes no more answers. If a match is cancelled, people who have not answered or who answered join or maybe get a cancellation DM.
Press a button again to change
The buttons stay after you press them, in the DM and on the web, so pressing another answer changes it. If the stage has moved on, the bot tells you why. For example, pressing join while the roster is pending gets “The roster is set — only “Decline” works now.” After the lineup is locked, pressing a button on the invite DM points you to Withdraw on the Teams assembled DM (that applies to people who joined).
The new answer shows right away in the DM text or the web Your reply row. If the stage has moved on, you get a notice saying why instead.
When an invite expires
Know the expiry rule
An invite expires 1 hour after the scheduled time. Pressing a button after that gets “This invite has expired — the match's scheduled time has passed.” and the DM buttons disappear. The web page shows the same notice instead of the answer buttons. Buttons in the announce channel reply with a notice only you can see. What the scheduled time does for invites and reminders is in Recurring matches and time polls.
- A match with no scheduled time never expires.
- Expiry only applies to the answering stages (Recruiting and Roster pending). Pressing Withdraw in the Lineup locked stage is not blocked by the clock.
Pulling out after the lineup is locked
When the lineup is locked, people who joined get the Teams assembled DM (maybes count once they turn into joins). It also carries calendar links when the match has a date. People who did not answer or declined do not get it.
Pulling out in the Lineup locked stage is recorded as a no-show and costs up to 120 Kleos. If you may not make it, press Decline before Lock lineup is pressed. How to pull out, what it costs and how it is reversed is in No-shows, marks and MVP.
When someone pulls out, whoever created the match (the matchmaker) gets a DM saying a substitute is needed. How a substitute is brought in is in the next section. There is no pull-out button in the In progress stage; anyone who does not show after the start is handled by the matchmaker in the attendance review.
How a substitute is called in
The matchmaker picks the substitute
A substitute is brought in when the matchmaker who made the match (or a server admin) picks a server member in the console and swaps them for the player who leaves. Members have no button to volunteer. Swaps are possible in the Recruiting, Roster pending and Lineup locked stages, and not from the In progress stage on.
If you are called in as a substitute
You get a DM with your slot, the time and a link to the match page. On the web match page your name carries a Sub mark and your answer is join.
We are preparing a feature that sends a Riot tournament code in the substitute DM. It is not active yet, so the code line in the DM only says it will be sent separately, and there is nothing to do today.
If you are the one swapped out
Your answer on the match page changes to Subbed out. After that, pressing a button on the old invite DM does not change anything, and pressing Withdraw on the old Teams assembled DM does not make you a no-show.
Where to go next
To see the matchmaker's side of sending invites and moving stages, read Run a match, step by step. How to pull out and what it costs is in No-shows, marks and MVP. The basics of the three buttons and what to do when the DM does not arrive are in A member's first 5 minutes. To check the causes of a missing DM one by one, see I didn't get the invite DM.
Check it worked
After you answer, the DM text changes to a line confirming your answer and the Your reply row on the match page under My matches shows the same one. Once the roster is confirmed, pressing join or maybe gets a notice that only decline works, and once the lineup is locked the Teams assembled DM with Withdraw arrives.
