Why Discord Moved You to the AFK Channel and How to Get Back

Last updated 2026-10-29

Why you get moved out of voice automatically — three causes

It is unsettling when you are in a voice channel, nobody moved you, and suddenly you are in another channel or have dropped out. On Discord this happens for three main reasons. First, Discord moved you to the server's AFK channel (the Inactive Channel). Second, a bot such as Kletoi moved you because the server turned on its AFK auto-move. Third, your connection dropped because of your internet or the app.

The quickest way to tell is to look at where you are now. If you are in a voice channel named something like AFK, it was one of the first two. If you are in no channel at all and the connection simply ended, the third is more likely. If a bot moved you, there may be a DM waiting for you, so check that too. Below, each case is explained along with how to get back.

When Discord moved you to the server's AFK channel

Every Discord server has an Inactive Channel and an Inactive Timeout setting, commonly called the AFK channel. When Discord decides a member has been away for the time the admin set, it moves that member to the AFK channel. The admin picks the time from 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes or 1 hour.

You cannot talk in the AFK channel, and you have to join your old channel yourself to come back. When Discord does the move itself, Kletoi sends no notification. What counts as away is decided by Discord; sitting for a while without any input may qualify.

When a bot moved you for staying deafened too long

If the server has turned on Kletoi's AFK auto-move, the rule is different. It does not look at being away; it only looks at how long you have stayed in the same channel with your headphones off (deafened). Someone with only the mic muted who is still listening is not moved. After 20 minutes with headphones off, it DMs a warning that you are about to be moved, and at 30 minutes it moves you to the server's AFK channel.

If you turn your headphones back on after the warning, the clock resets to zero and you are not moved. You have to complete 30 minutes in the same channel to be moved, and the clock restarts if you switch channels yourself. After an admin turns the feature on, there is a grace period of at least 30 minutes.

After you are moved, a DM with a link back arrives. The bot does not move you back on its own. If your room was a temporary channel and nobody else was in it, the room is empty and gets cleaned up; in that case the DM has no link and instead tells you that joining the trigger channel creates a new room.

How to get back from the AFK channel

If a bot moved you, the DM has a link back. Click it to return to the voice channel you were in.

  1. If the DM has a link, click it to go back to your original channel. If that room has already been cleaned up, the DM has a short note instead of a link.
  2. If the room is gone, join the trigger channel that creates new rooms to make a new one, or simply pick another voice channel.
  3. If Discord itself moved you to the AFK channel there is no DM, so pick your original channel from the voice channel list yourself.
  4. After you are back, check that your headphones (deafen) icon is not crossed out and turn it back on if it is. That is what keeps you from being moved again.

How to avoid being moved again

The surest way is to leave the voice channel when you will be away for a long time. For a short break, keeping your headphones on is enough to stay out of the bot's way. Muting only your mic does not meet the bot's rule.

The bot does not move people out of the team voice channel of an in-house match in progress, or out of trigger channels that create a new room when joined. It also does not move someone who is already in the AFK channel. Discord's own AFK follows Discord's rules, so the tips above may not always work for it.

How to ask an admin to change the settings

If the time feels too short or you find the feature annoying, you can ask a server admin. The server's AFK timeout is changed by someone with the right permission in Server Settings under Overview. Kletoi's AFK auto-move can be turned off with the 'AFK auto-move' switch in the web console's settings, and the warning and move DMs with the 'AFK warning DM' switch.

It helps to tell them which case you had. If a DM arrived, it was the bot's move; if there was no DM, it was most likely the server's own AFK. The setup steps are covered in the admin article (Discord AFK Channel Setup), so you can pass that along.

If you have turned off 'Reminders & nudges' DMs in your own DM settings, you may be moved without receiving the warning.

When it is not the server or a bot — a dropped connection

You can also drop out of a voice channel when your internet is down or unstable, when the Discord app restarts or updates, or when Discord itself has an outage. Kletoi cannot see this and cannot tell what caused it. Just keep in mind that this happens too.

If it keeps happening with no DM and no AFK channel involved, check Discord's official help center (support.discord.com) for its voice connection troubleshooting guide.
